The Manager, Business Development (Corporate Practice Group) is responsible for developing, leading, and implementing marketing and business development activities for our nationally recognized practice.

Our 150-member Corporate Practice Group across 11 US offices in New York, California, Boston, Providence, Chicago, and Washington, DC is looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to join our team. This Business Development Manager will serve as the primary business development and marketing strategist responsible for developing, leading, and implementing marketing and business development activities for our nationally recognized Corporate Practice Group and various teams within, including, Franchise, Employee Benefits, M&A, and Securities.

This is an exempt position requiring flexibility in work hours. This position may involve occasional travel to other firm offices or events. A hybrid work arrangement is available for this position.

Reporting Relationships: This position reports to a Senior Business Development Manager or Director and directly supervises a Business Development Specialist.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • The Manager will execute on the following essential functions:With practice group leaders and Marketing and Business Development (MBD) team members, develop strategic plans to drive the business development and marketing goals of the Litigation Department and assigned groups.

Incorporate in-depth knowledge of relevant industries and litigation into firmwide business strategies; anticipate client needs and trends and develop responsive solutions to support practice groups and individual attorneys.
Develop strong, responsive relationships with practice group and team leaders to gain consensus on and to direct strategies.
Collaborate closely with marketing and business development colleagues to ensure MBD plans integrate with and support firmwide marketing and BD strategies and the strategies of other practice groups and departments
Supervise and mentor a business development specialist assigned to support practice group and teams.

  • Business Development and Marketing Programs Implementation:

Work closely with practice group and team leaders and marketing and BD to:Identify speaking and sponsorship opportunities, target appropriate membership opportunities, etc. to create visibility and advance new business goals.
Work closely with firm lateral hiring managers to ensure that new lateral partner hires are effectively integrated and their expertise and association with the firm is strategically communicated to clients, firm attorneys, and business communities, etc.
Draft responses for and provide strategic direction into relevant legal directories and promotional opportunities to increase awareness and recognition of select practice groups.
Provide thought leadership, executed through direct mail and email, including client alerts, digital and social media, etc.
Develop effective, strategically focused marketing materials; ensure that practice group descriptions, attorney bios, etc. present a consistent image, align with practice group strategies, and are continually updated to reflect changes.
Produce client development seminars, firm-sponsored events, conferences, and trade shows. Take seminars from concept through all stages of implementation and presentation, including identifying attendees, locations, materials development and production, facility liaison, lead follow-up, etc.
Works closely with the firm’s Strategic Pursuits and Competitive Intelligence teams to conduct research and obtain market intelligence on industries, trade associations, clients, and prospects and prepares tailored promotional letters, pitches, PowerPoint presentations, and proposals. Also offers guidance and relevant content in the preparation of effective, timely responses to requests for proposals , requests for information , and requests for quotations .
Develop and maintain collateral materials, including case experience lists, practice area descriptions, and website content.
Plan and participate in practice group, team, and industry initiative meetings and attend practice group, team, and industry initiative leader meetings.
Develop and monitor budgets.

  • Collaboration with Marketing & Business Development Department:Work closely with MBD Department and professional staff firmwide to ensure seamless deployment of practice group marketing programs and strategies.

Work closely with the Media Relations and Communications and Design teams to develop strategies and written communications, press releases, digital media strategies and content, etc. to promote attorney, practice group, team, and firm successes.
Collaborate with appropriate team members to develop content for the website, firm collateral, and internal communications.

  • Professional Expertise:Remain highly informed of relevant industry trends and developments and relevant business practices and structures and develop this knowledge into targeted and strategically focused programs and recommendations for the Litigation Department and assigned teams.

Regularly expand knowledge on opportunities relevant to clients and potential clients that could promote business development and marketing strategies for the assigned groups and teams.
Ensure expertise in technology relevant to the position; proactively use most current technology to further teamwork, client service, and efficiency; strategically use marketing tools to regularly identify, source, and expand opportunities for realization of marketing and BD plans.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5–8 years of marketing or business development experience, preferably in a major law firm and/or professional services environment, with minimum 3 years in a management role. MBA a plus.
  • Knowledge of litigation practice a plus.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Creative, forward thinker capable of bringing new ideas to practice areas and client service teams.
  • Results-oriented team player with ability to develop deep knowledge of sources of business and resources (e.g. professional organizations, publications, referral sources) for the practice areas.
  • Ability to adapt writing style to reflect the firm’s verbal/written brand. Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Detail-oriented.
  • Proven ability to strategize, plan, and execute events and webinars.
  • Leadership, mentoring, coaching, and client-service skills.
  • Familiar with and comfortable using marketing databases. Knowledge of InterAction (CRM) a plus. Must be able to manage heavy workload, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
  • Must be a self-starter who knows how to motivate people, possesses initiative and a positive attitude, and is able to pay strong attention to details.
  • Must be willing and able to “roll up sleeves” and handle any aspect (from administrative to supervisory) of the marketing task at hand to accomplish the job, including, as necessary, providing assistance for other marketing projects that may be initiated out of another office.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Los Angeles: $99,600.00 to $151,900.00
  • NYC: $104,500.00 to $159,500.00

In addition, this position may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and full benefits package. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, education, and qualification level. This salary range is Nixon Peabody’s good faith estimate at the time of this posting.
